Hockey great Murray Oliver died of a heart attack on Sunday at the age of 77.

Oliver played in 1,127 NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota North Stars.

NHL.com notes Oliver was an outstanding player who scored 274 goals and tallied 728 points in 17 NHL seasons. He was a five time All-Star and finished second in the voting for the 1959-60 Calder Memorial Trophy as the League's top rookie.

Oliver's best season came in 1963-64 where he tallied a career-high 68 points for the Bruins.

He still had some great seasons with the North Stars (1970-75). According to the Star Tribune, one of those years was in 1971-72 when Oliver tallied 56 points.

Following his playing career, Oliver became an assistant coach for the North Stars from 1978-86. During that time he became the head coach for 36 games during the 1982-83 when Glen Sonmor stepped down because of health reasons.

That season Oliver helped direct the North Stars to a second place finish in the Norris Division and a first round playoff victory over Toronto.

Oliver remained in Minnesota following his NHL days. He was living in Edina when he died on Sunday.

Oliver's heart attack occurred just hours before the death of one of his closest friends, Pat Quinn, with whom he played juniors with in the 1950's, in Hamilton, Ontario.

The two were hockey legends in Hamilton.

"I can't believe he and Pat passed away within hours of each other," said Oliver's wife Helen to the Hamilton Spectator.
