Nick Pieruccini ran for a seven yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to lift Minnesota State Mankato to a 20-17 victory over Minnesota Duluth in a big Northern Sun Conference opener Thursday night.

Both the Mavericks and Bulldogs came into the game ranked among the top five in NCAA Division II Football and the game lived up to its billing, as more than 6,000 people attended at Blakeslee Stadium in Mankato.

Both Pieruccini and the Mavericks' other quarterback, Ricky Lloyd, ran for nearly 100 yards in the game. Pieruccini finished with 94 yards on the ground and the touchdown, while Lloyd ran for 96 yards.

Pieruccini also led the Mavericks on their other scoring drive as he connected with Ty Dennis on a 72 yard touchdown pass.

Drew Bauer threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown in the loss for the Bulldogs. He finished 10 of 22 for 131 yards and the touchdown pass.

The Mavericks (1-0) will play Northern State on Sept. 12, while the Bulldogs (0-1) will host Wayne State.
