Minnesota's Tom Lehman chosen as vice captain of 2016 Ryder Cup team

Alexandria-native Tom Lehman has been named as a vice captain for Team USA at the 2016 Ryder Cup, which will be played in Minnesota at Hazeltine.

The U.S. team is being captained by Davis Love III. He replaces Tom Watson, who led the U.S. to a third consecutive defeat in the biennial event in 2014.

It was Love who then turned to Lehman, to be a vice captain.

"It will be an honor to serve with him on the 2016 team," said Lehman during a Tuesday press conference. "On a personal level being from Minnesota, being able to go back home and be a part of the Ryder Cup team will be a thrill of all thrills."

Lehman has extensive experience with the cup and has played on three Ryder Cup teams himself. He was also the captain of the 2006 squad and will be one of four vice captains in 2016.

Lehman and Love both believe the team is set up well for the challenging and long course.

Eight of the 12 members of the U.S. Team will be named on points earned following the conclusion of The Barclays, which will conclude Sunday Aug. 28, 2016.

Four additional players will be selected to the team as Captain's Picks – three of them after the conclusion of the BMW Championship, the final spot will be after the Tour Championship.

The U.S. owns a 25-13-2 overall record in the event, but Europe is 10-4-1 in since 1985 and has won three straight.
