While Orono provided some drama in a win over Alexandria in the Class A boys' state hockey championship game, Minnetonka skated past Duluth East in a rather uneventful AA title game by a score of 5-2.

Special teams is where Minnetonka separated itself from the Greyhounds, killing off all six of its penalties and scoring on two of their three power plays.

Tonk's captain, Joey Molenaar, scored his 31st goal of the season and was named the Herb Brooks Award winner as the tournament's most outstanding player.

It was Minnetonka's first appearance in the state tournament since 2010.

Orono defeats Alexandria for 1A crown

The third-seeded Orono Spartans claimed the first boys state hockey championship in school history with a 2-1 victory over No. 4 seed Alexandria.

Tied 1-1 in the third period, Orono scored the winning goal with a little bit of luck when Jack Kubitz's shot went wide of the goal only to carom back out in front of the goal where Landon Wittenberg slapped it into an empty net.

Wittenberg, who wears No. 13 on his sweater, then captured the hearts of thousands with a postgame comment in which he said wearing the same number as former Benilde-St. Margaret's hockey player Jack Jablonksi means he owes it to the game and Jablonski to play as hard as he possibly can every game.

Jablonski was paralyzed during a game in December of 2011.

Alexandria goalie Jackson Boline was tough to put a puck past all tournament, allowing just four goals in three games, including a shutout in the opening round against Thief River Falls.

Orono out-shot Alexandria 27-16.
