Major League Baseball is adding a second Wild Card team to each league beginning this season. There will be a one game playoff between the two Wild Card teams in each league. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire says the one game playoff is "exciting for one day, and then somebody goes home and you're still pissed off."

The Wild are ranked second in the Western Conference. They've managed to accomplish that with a lot of blocked shots and without Dany Heatley and Mikko Koivu. ESPN analyst Barry Melrose says the team has the makings for a playoff chance.

Defending national champion Minnesota Duluth will host Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) in the first round of the NCAA Division II football playoffs Saturday. In Division III play, another Duluth-area college -- St. Scholastica -- will make its inaugural postseason appearance at St. Thomas.

Besides Nick Punto and Ron Washington, there will another familiar face on the St. Louis Cardinals’ World Series roster. Former Twins pitcher Kyle Lohse is scheduled to start Game 4. Lohse has been with the Cards the past four seasons. He’s winless so far in two starts this postseason.

The Minnesota Wild have sent rookie forward Brett Bulmer to Kelowna of the Western Hockey League. Bulmer, 19, had three assists in nine games in his NHL debut. Because he hasn't played 10 games in the NHL, the first season of his three-year NHL contract has not started.

About 1,500 fans, dressed in green and gold, were at the Fargodome late Saturday night to welcome home the North Dakota State University football team. The Bison won the school's first Division I title with a 17-6 victory over Sam Houston State University in Frisco, Texas.
