NFL Draft: Wentz waits to find out where he's headed

Carson Wentz has won national championships. He wowed scouts at the Senior Bowl, impressed them at the NFL Scouting Combine and drew rave reviews at his pro day.

So now on the eve of the biggest day of his life so far, all there is for the Bismarck, North Dakota, native to do is wait for the phone to ring.

Wentz, who led North Dakota State to their fifth straight FCS National Championship, isn't expected to have to wait too long. He and California quarterback Jared Goff are expected to have their names called first or second on Thursday night during the NFL Draft.

Los Angeles has the first pick, Philadelphia has the second pick after trading up with Cleveland and neither is tipping their hand.

While the presumption around the league is that the Rams will select Goff, who starred at California, and the Eagles will take Wentz second, Wentz said Wednesday he has not heard from the Eagles since they made the trade to move up.

CBS Philadelphia outlines five traits that make Wentz a perfect fit for the Eagles.

  1. Humble
  2. Blue-collar
  3. Tough
  4. Smart – Wentz was a 4.0 student, never recording a B in his life.
  5. Quarterback – The Eagles haven't had a franchise quarterback since Donovan McNabb left

If Philadelphia does call his name at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago Thursday night Wentz may not be called upon to start right away. Eagles coach Doug Peterson would prefer that the quarterback they choose sit and learn the offense behind either Sam Bradford or Chase Daniel.

That doesn't seem to bother Wentz too much.

"As a competitor, you want to get on the field as soon as you can," Wentz told Wednesday. "But you want to do best for your team, your career and everything. That's not for me to decide. I'm just going there to compete, do the best I can, earn the respect of my teammates and everything. The coaches will decide when I'm ready."

It won't be much longer before we know whose uniform Wentz will wear when he takes the field.
