The Gopher men's hockey team opens a two-game series Friday against Minnesota State at Mariucci Arena.

Minnesota is ranked No. 2 behind Boston College. SB Nation says Minnesota received three first-place votes in the last USCHO poll. A solid series combined with any slip-up by Boston will push the Gophers to the top spot.

Although Minnesota alway looks better on paper, history shows match-ups with MSU are always pretty close.

The Star Tribune predicts a Gophers sweep. MSU has had success in the past banging up the Gophers, but Minnesota has size and speed. Decent goaltending should earn the 'U' a 'W.'

Saturday, the Mavericks host Minnesota at Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato.

The No. 3-rated Gophers (18-9-1, 14-5-0) ended their Friday night losing streak at Mariucci Arena with a 2-1 victory over St. Cloud State (10-13-4, 7-9-3). Nick Bjugstad scored the game-winning goal about halfway through the second period. U of M will travel to the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud Saturday night for the second half of this home-and-home series.

Gophers No. 8 in latest USA Today poll

The Golden Gophers hockey team split their weekend series with Vermont but it was still good enough to move up from No. 10 to No. 8 in the latest USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. Minnesota remains ranked No. 8 in the USCHO.com poll as well.

Gophers ranked No. 10 in the nation

Don Lucia's Golden Gophers jumped four spots in the USA Today/USA National College Hockey rankings from No. 14 to No. 10 in the country. Minnesota is off to a 4-0 start after sweeping UMD over the weekend.
