Malakwen takes Twin Cities Marathon

Sammy Malakwen finished first in Sunday's Twin Cities marathan, finishing the 26-mile course in a little over 2 hours 13 minutes. Malakwen is a native Kenyan who lives in Two Harbors. He fell short of winning Grandma's Marathon finishing third overall. Ethiopian Yeshimebet Tadesse-Bifa wins the women's race with a time of 2:28:24.

Duluth native Kara Goucher, 34, ran the biggeest race of her life in London Sunday morning. The Duluth News Tribune reports the northern Minnesota Olympian finished the women's marathon 11th in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 7 seconds.

Lindsey Vonn captures her 50th World Cup victory

Vonn captured the milestone victory by winning the downhill on the demanding Kandahar course in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on Saturday. The Minnesota native completed the 1.8-mile course in one minute 44.86 seconds. According to SkiRacing.com, Vonn is only the third woman in World Cup history to earn 50 wins. World Cup racing in Germany continues Sunday with a women’s super G.

North Shore inline skate marathon smoothes course for racers

The number of skaters for the Northshore Inline Marathon is less than half what it was ten years ago, but it’s still the largest skate race in the nation. Organizers say they’ve smoothed out some sections that have tripped up skaters in the past. The 26-mile race between Two Harbors and Duluth is tomorrow.

Duluth native Goucher wins Grandma's half-marathon

Kara Goucher, who will represent the U.S. in the Olympic marathon in London, finished a 13.1-mile half-marathon event Saturday in a course-record 1 hour, 9 minutes, 34 seconds. She was back in her hometown for Grandma's Marathon weekend, and was lifted along the way by her old classmates from Duluth East, former neighbors and family friends who came to see her first race in town since her high school days.
