Back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 boosted Tom Pernice Jr. to a one-stroke victory in the 3M Championship at TPC Twin Cities on Sunday.

Pernice Jr. held the lead by two shots entering Sunday's final round, but he needed both birdies to come-from-behind to catch Jeff Sluman and Corey Pavin, who each finished the tournament at 16-under par.

Sluman fired a blistering 8-under, 28 on the front nine en route to a sensational round of 62. He had eight birdies and one par on the front, and two birdies with seven pars on the back.

"Oh gosh, it probably happens once every two or three years," Sluman said to Tom Powers. "But on Sunday, when it's going on and you kind of have a chance to win the tournament, it kind of magnifies itself a little bit."

Jim Souhan writes that Sluman, a 5-foot-7, 140 pound man, proves that in golf, "skill trumps size."

Here's the recap from the Pioneer Press.

Former Gopher and co-designer of TPC Twin Cities, Tom Lehman, finished nine shots back at 8-under.
