Phelps wins gold in final race and Team USA wins 1,000th gold

In his final race, Michael Phelps helped the United States men's swimming team to a gold medal in the 4x100 medley relay. Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller and Nathan Adrian gave the U.S. the gold.

Phelps took to his facebook page before the race to announce the 4x100 would be his last professional race.

Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer and Simone Manuel of the United States women's team also picked up another gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay final.

The win was 1000th gold medal for the United States in their Olympic history.

As a whole, the men's and women's team collected 33 medals in swimming for the United States.

Bootsma helps send Team USA to 4x100m finals

Eden Prairie-native Rachel Bootsma helped Team USA advance to the finals in the women’s 4x100 meter medley relay set for Saturday. Bootsma led off the relay with a 100-meter backstroke time of 59.70 seconds, putting the U.S. in third place, the Star Tribune reports. The Americans qualified with the fourth-fastest time. Bootsma won’t swim Saturday, but she will receive a medal if the team finishes in the top three.

Team USA took on Spain in a rematch of the 2008 gold medal game, and a possible preview of the 2012 gold medal game -- and the American men dominated with a 100-78 win. Kevin Love played only 13 minutes, but he pulled down nine rebounds. The U.S. begins its defense of the gold medal Sunday against France.
