Phil Kessel takes a shot at USA Hockey following World Cup loss

The former Gopher's cryptic tweet wasn't well-received by NHL stars.

Phil Kessel dropped one of those truth bombs on USA Hockey after the Americans were eliminated from the World Cup in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Canada.

Kessel, who is one of the best U.S.-born goal scorers, was left off Team USA's roster. Puck Daddy notes team managers chose to build a squad made up of more physical, defensive-minded players.

The former Minnesota Gopher and Madison, Wisconsin, native sent out a strategically-timed tweet as the game ended Tuesday night.

As you might imagine the tweet has touched off a firestorm.

"Of course it wasn't directed at the players," Kessel said to ESPN. "I know how tough it is to play the game. It wasn't directed at anyone."

But many of the players were disappointed at Kessel's comments, including Wild forward Zach Parise.

"Everyone can have their opinion," Parise told CBS Sports. "They can say what they want to say. We were here. We tried hard, we played hard, and came up short. Didn't Phil have surgery? I don't think he could even play, anyway. His tweet didn't really make sense."
