Phil Mickelson's opening round at the British Open at Royal Swoon in Scotland was one for the record books.

"Lefty" finished minus-8 with a 63 and is currently the leader in the clubhouse. His 63 tied the record for lowest opening round ever at a major championship, according to ESPN.

His birdie putt on the 18th lipped out. Had it gone in he would stand alone for the lowest opening round ever at a major.

Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy each finished Round 1 at 2-under while Jordan Spieth shot an even par 71 and Jason Day finished at 2 over. Bubba Watson finished minus-1 while Dustin Johnson was even par through 16 holes.
