Prep Baseball Tournament: Top seeds fall in 2A, 3A

The 2013 Minnesota state baseball finals are taking shape, with a few upsets on this semi-final Friday.

In Class 3A play Friday, Mounds View eliminated top-seeded Coon Rapids, 9-4, to earn a trip to the title game.

The Mustangs will play Rocori in the championship game. The Spartans took advantage of five errors to beat Minnetonka, 4-1.

In 2A, Kasson-Mantorville defeated top seed St. Cloud Cathedral, 2-0. In the other 2A semi-final, Perham beat Watertown-Mayer, 5-3, to advance to Monday's final.

In 1A play, unranked BOLD of Olivia knocked off defending champion St. Agnes, 12-4, Friday. Osakis also advanced to the 1A title game, with a 3-0 victory over New York Mills.

All three championship games will be held Monday at Target Field.

Thursday, the tournament got off to an historic start when Coon Rapids senior Logan Shore (who is also a Twins draft choice) threw a no-hitter, eliminating Wayzata.

In Class 1A, BOLD junior Logan Sandgren also pitched a no-hitter as his team buried top seed Wabasha-Kellogg, 13-0. The game went just six innings, however, due to the 10-run rule.

In Class 2A, top seed St. Cloud Cathedral downed Luverne, 4-1, to advance. Junior pitcher Jeff Fasching was one out away from throwing a no-hitter in that one. But Luverne's Gunnar Olson singled with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to stop Fasching's bid.
