State wrestling: STMA, Apple Valley tie for 3A team title; Jackson County, Kasson-Mantorville win
The state wrestling tournament is under way in St. Paul, with team competition Thursday and individuals Friday.
In Class 1A, No. 1 seed Jackson County Central claimed its fourth straight state championship with a 38-22 win over No. 2 seed Frazee.
In Class 2A, No. 1 seed Kasson-Mantorville put an end to No. 2 seed Simley's run of five straight state titles.
The Class 3A championship between No. 1 St. Michael-Albertville and No. 2 seed Apple Valley went down to the wire -- and it stayed at the wire. The match resulted in a TIE. Apple Valley led 28-25 into the final match between heavyweights, which STMA took three points to earn the tie.
In individual meets, 24 state champions return to St. Paul to defend their respective titles. Nineteen wrestlers come to state with undefeated records.
