QB Alex Smith traded to KC

Author:

Forget about Alex Smith backing up -- or replacing -- Christian Ponder next year.

The San Francisco 49ers say they’re trading their former starting quarterback to the Kansas City Chiefs.

ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert, who writes the NFC North Blog, says there are no indications the Vikings were ever in the hunt for Smith.

He points to comments from GM Rick Spielman and coach Leslie Frazier at the NFL scouting combine last week.

Quoting Frazier: "We're not at a point where we're looking for a quarterback to come in and move Christian at all. We expect him just to keep getting better."
