Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams speaks on Bridgewater hit

Author:

Five days after Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer called the hit that knocked Teddy Bridgewater out of last week's 21-18 victory over St. Louis dirty, the Rams defensive coordinator had a chance to speak.

ESPN notes that for the most part Gregg Williams avoided a direct response to any of Zimmer's comments about the hit.

"We're on to Chicago right now and I'm not worried about that," said Williams Friday. "The things that go on in our game ... no matter where I'm at, we're going to play faster, smarter, tougher, for longer than any opponent. That's all I'm going to say."

During the fourth quarter of last Sunday's game, Rams cornerback Lamarcus Joyner delivered a late hit to the head of Bridgewater, who had already begun sliding.

Bridgewater still has not been cleared to start Sunday's game in Oakland.

Joyner was fined $23,152 by the NFL for the hit, but he was not suspended.

Pro Football Talk reports that Williams defended Joyner saying the defensive back was "just trying to tackle [Bridgewater]" and called Joyner "exactly what I want to coach."

Following the game, Zimmer took issue with the hit and even pointed to Williams' history – which included a suspension for his involvement in 'Bounty Gate' while he was the defensive coordinator in New Orleans.
