Report: Flip turns down offer from Gophers

Author:

Sources confirmed Friday that the University of Minnesota's top choice to replace Tubby Smith is ESPN analyst and former NBA coach Flip Saunders.

But, according to ESPN's Andy Katz, Saunders declined.

In an interview with KFAN’s Dan Barreiro Friday, Saunders said he’s still an NBA analyst and “ex-coach.” KFAN reported Saunders, the former Gopher who later coached the Timeberwolves, was in Indianapolis Friday to watch his friend Tom Izzo coach Michigan State.

It was also reported Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague was in the city as well in hopes of securing a deal.

Earlier this week, Shaka Smart, who was also reportedly on the U’s short list, signed an extension with VCU.

Thursday night, Fred Hoiberg, who was reportedly offered the Gopher post, signed an extension with Iowa State.
