Report: Vikings might shelve Bradford for the rest of the season

The report comes within 24 hours of Teddy Bridgewater likely being activated.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is the latest to report that the Vikings plan to activate Teddy Bridgewater by Wednesday's deadline, but he's the first to report that Sam Bradford (knee) could be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Mortensen added that Case Keenum will start this Sunday when the Vikings play the Redskins on the road, but Bridgewater will be ready to start in the very near future.

Perhaps the only thing keeping Bradford from already being placed in injured reserve is his visit with Dr. James Andrews, which is happening today, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

If Bradford's season is over, the Vikings will undoubtedly have a midseason quarterback competition between Keenum and Bridgewater, with Kyle Sloter remaining on the team as the third quarterback option.

If the Vikings don't think Bradford is done for the season, they could waive Sloter and hope Bradford gives them a third quarterback option later this season.

Another option is to keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.

It's been 22 months since Bridgewater has played in a regular season game, which is why, speculatively, the Vikings will very likely give Bridgewater some live game action no matter how well Keenum plays.

Bridgewater, so far, has taken backup reps in six practices, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero

ESPN points out that because Bridgewater is a free agent in 2018, the Vikings probably want a good look at him in games before deciding the best course of action for the future.
