Reports: Fred Hoiberg expected to be next Bulls coach

Author:

According to reports, former Minnesota Timberwolves player Fred Hoiberg is expected to be named the next head coach of the Chicago Bulls sometime in the next several days.

Sources tell The Des Moines Register an announcement could come Tuesday, possibly Wednesday. Other sources including the Chicago Tribune say it would be announced before Thursday's NBA finals.

He would replace Tom Thibodeau who was fired Thursday after five seasons, Sports Illustrated reports.

Hoiberg is the current head coach at Iowa State, where he's been for five seasons. The Cyclones have gone 115-56 in his time as coach and made four NCAA tournaments, Sports Illustrated notes.

Hoiberg played for the Timberwolves from 2003 to 2005. He had to retire due to a heart condition after the 2005 season and then joined the Wolves front office.

Hoiberg also played for the Bulls from 1999-2003.

Some reports a few weeks ago said the Timberwolves also reached out to Hoiberg to come back as Minnesota's head coach.

ESPN notes the Wolves had "strong interest" in Hoiberg.
