Reports suggest Twins might be close to signing Lance Lynn

Lance Lynn would be a big addition to the starting rotation.

There's speculation aplenty about the Twins possibly signing free agent starting pitcher Lance Lynn, perhaps in the very near future.

First, the's Rhett Bollinger reports that the Twins have outrighted minor league reliever J.T. Chargois, thus opening a spot on the 40-man roster.

Second, FanRaySports' Jon Heyman, who's been locked in on all things Twins this spring, says the Twins still have available funding to sign another pitcher, with his sources suggesting that the pitcher they covet is Lynn.

And 1500 ESPN's Phil Mackey points out that opening a roster spot at this time of year is uncommon, possibly suggesting a move is looming.

If the Twins do sign Lynn, who's spent his entire career with the Cardinals, their rotation will be awfully solid on paper, especially once last year's staff ace, Ervin Santana, returns from his finger injury in May.

Possible rotation if Lynn is signed (2017 stats):

  1. Lance Lynn (11-8, 3.43 ERA)
  2. Jake Odorizzi (10-8, 4.14 ERA)
  3. Jose Berrios (14-8, 3.89 ERA)
  4. Ervin Santana (16-8, 3.28 ERA)
  5. Kyle Gibson (12-10, 5.07 ERA)

That's five names that would be an incredible upgrade from last year's rotation, and coupling it with a vastly improved bullpen and one of the top offenses in the American League would make the Twins a serious threat to compete with the Cleveland Indians in the Central Division.

Gibson's 5.07 ERA last summer looks awful, but he went 7-3 with a 3.76 ERA in the second half, something the Twins hope rolls over to begin 2018.

And if any of the above names stink, the Twins have a wealth of pitchers on the rise – Adalberto Mejia, Stephen Gonsalves, Fernando Romero, Zach Littel, Felix Jorge – who would likely be ready, possibly as soon as the start of the season.
