Twins call up Mejia; Buxton's been under the weather

After Friday's marathon game, the Twins called up Adalberto Mejia from the Rochester Red Wings – the guy the Twins got in the trade that sent Eduardo Nunez to the Giants.

Mejia is primarily a starter but could be used out of the bullpen this weekend with the Twins' relievers taxed from Friday's game.

With Mejia being called up, the Twins sent down Kennys Vargas to Triple-A Rochester. It's unclear at this time if Mejia will stay with the Twins long-term or if he's here just for the weekend.

Paul Molitor told the Star Tribune they'd like to keep Mejia on an innings limit of 150 this year. Currently Mejia has thrown 125 innings, which is a career-high in his six seasons in minor league baseball.

Since being acquired, the 23-year-old is 1-2 with a 4.66 ERA in 19 innings pitched with Rochester but has put up solid number all season.

Between San Francisco and Minnesota, the left-hander has a 3.10 ERA and is averaging 8.7 strikeouts per 9 innings.

Buxton has the flu

Byron Buxton has been out of the Rochester Red Wings lineup for the past five games battling the flu. He made an appearance in Friday's game as a pinch-runner but hasn't made a start since Aug. 16.

Since being demoted, Buxton is batting .222 with a home run in 27 at bats.
