Former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to remove his prostate.

Last February, Gardenhire was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He took an assistant coaching job with the Arizona Diamondbacks last winter.

He told reporters about his diagnoses during the team's first week of Spring Training. The 59-year-old manager told reporters he learned about his diagnosis after undergoing tests in Minnesota.

Doctors believe they caught the cancer early and the former Manager of the Year is optimistic he can beat the cancer.

"Now it’s about getting the thing taken out,” Gardenhire told Fox Sports in February. "As I told the players and everybody, I’m trying to lose weight. I’m going to lose a five-pound prostate and that’s good.”

"As I’ve done everything in my life, we’ve attacked,” Gardenhire said, “and I’m going to attack this. We’re going to challenge this and beat it.”

Gardenhire managed the Twins for 13 years, winning six division titles from 2002-14.
