Screaming Eagles squeak past Mavericks in semifinals

A four-run bottom of the fourth inning was enough to lift Southern Indiana to a come-from-behind victory over Minnesota State University in the National Semifinals, 4-3, Friday afternoon.

The loss ended the season for the Mavericks at 48-11, one game short of the National Championship game.

Minnesota State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single from Stetson Olson. Olson was 3 for 4 on the day.

Maverick starter Jason Hoppe frustrated the Screaming Eagles for the first three innings, but in the fourth Southern Indiana got to him.

The Screaming Eagles put together four singles in the fourth inning, and thus scored all four of their runs. After an RBI single from Caleb Eickhoff tied the game up, a Maverick error allowed the go ahead run to score.

Hoppe allowed four runs (three earned) in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked three. He was tagged with the loss.

After that, the pitchers completely shut it down the rest of the way.

The Mavericks had another threat in the sixth inning. Minnesota State put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth inning, but they were unable to push across the tying run.

They had another chance in the eighth, after a Southern Indiana throwing error put Mavericks on the corners with two out, but a groundout ended the threat.
