'Smells like a fart': They had to close the green diving pool in Rio

It's never a good thing when Olympic divers start comparing the color of the pool they're using to Shrek's bath water, but those jokes weren't as funny when the pool was closed Friday morning for cleaning.

A German diver was quoted as telling Australian reporter Tom Steinfort that "the whole building smells like a fart."

Officials have tried to make it clear that the pool was safe for use and that it was only closed because the water needs to remain still in order to change back to blue. But whatever they did to try to fix it didn't work – at least not right away.

The pool reopened Friday afternoon but it was still a shade of green, prompting Mario Andrada, the chief spokesman for the Rio 2016 organizing committee, to offer up a quote that we're pretty sure every scientist would disagree with.

"Chemistry is not an exact science," he said, according to the Chicago Tribune. "Some things, as you can see, went longer than expected."

British diver Tom Daley was left wondering if he had been diving into something unsanitary and American diver Abby Johnson tweeted, "#FixTheSwamp."
