St. Cloud State gains first-ever berth in Frozen Four with 4-1 win over Miami

Even with the Golden Gophers and the MSU Mavericks knocked out of the NCAA tournament in the first round, Minnesota will be represented at the Frozen Four.

St. Cloud State scored two straight upset victories to win the Midwest Regional and earn a spot in the national semi-finals. Sunday's 4-1 victory over Miami University of Ohio followed Saturday's 5-1 beating of Notre Dame.

The Huskies were led by freshman Joey Benik. He scored only three goals during the entire regular season, but managed four goals this weekend. He netted two against Notre Dame and two more against Miami. Cory Thorson also scored twice, including an empty-netter. Ryan Faragher made 20 saves in goal.

St. Cloud State was the second highest-scoring team in college hockey this season, while Miami's defense allowed the second-fewest goals.

St. Cloud gets a week off before heading to the Pittsburgh for the Frozen Four. They'll face top-ranked Quinnipiac on April 11.
