St. Cloud State hockey beats top-seeded UND in NCHC semifinals

The St. Cloud State Huskies took down the No. 1 University of North Dakota in the NCHC Frozen Four Faceoff tournament with a 3-1 at the Target Center Friday.

UND scored first with 3:53 left in the first period with Keaton Thompson scoring with the assists from Tucker Poolman and Johnny Simonson.

The Huskies found their pace, responding with a David Morley goal to tie it up with 24.5 left in the first. It took just 19 seconds for Joey Benik to find the net and bring St. Cloud State the 2-1 lead.

With 1:05 left in the game, the Huskies sealed the game with a Joe Rehkamp goal, when St. Cloud State pulled the goalie.

North Dakota had a season-low 20 shots in the game, according to the Associated Press.

With the win, the Huskies are now eligible for the NCAA tournament, the St. Cloud Times reports. They'll play for an automatic bid for the tourney.

The Huskies will face University of Miami Ohio in the championship game Saturday night. UND will play against Denver in the third-place game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
