State Hockey: Edina, Duluth East, Lakeville North, Eden Prairie reach semis

The two-time defending State Class 2A champion Edina held off a late rally from Bemidji to hold on for a 6-4 quarterfinal victory Thursday.

It was Bemidji's first state hockey tournament appearance since 1986. Interestingly enough it wasn't the first time the two have met during the state hockey tournament. According to the Star Tribune, Edina beat Bemidji 6-0 in the 1974 state championship.

Matt Masterman finished with a pair of goals, while nine different Hornets tallied points in the victory. Rocky Copiskey had a goal and two assists for Bemidji.

Edina took control early building a 3-0 lead in the first period, but things changed early in the second as the Lumberjacks cut the Edina lead to one and the battle was on.

After the Hornets pushed the lead back to three at 5-2, Bemidji again trimmed it to one on Josh Lusby's goal at the 16:05 mark of the third. Edina answered back with an empty-net goal from Casey Dornbach less than a minute later.

Edina advances to the semifinals on Friday where they will meet Duluth East.
