It took two overtimes, but Lakeville North defeated Eden Prairie 5-4 in the first Class 2A semifinal.

It was a game that will go down as one of the greatest in the Class 2A Minnesota State Hockey Tournament history.

According to the Star Tribune, Eden Prairie built a 4-2 lead in the second period on a Michael Parrish goal, but Lakeville North battled back. They scored two goals in the final two minutes of the period, Tristen Hazlett and Nick Poehling found the net to tie the score at 4.

It stayed that way until Poehling's second goal of the game, which came during the second overtime.

Edina holds off Eagan in the semifinals

Edina fought off a tough battle with Eagan in the State Class 2A semifinals on Saturday night winning 3-1.

Edina's Dylan Malmquist put Edina on the board in the first with a goal to put the Hornets on top 1-0.

Excellent goal play controlled the majority of the game. After Malmquist's early goal Eagan's Andrew Lindgren and Edina's Andrew Rohkohl shut it down until late in the second period.

Finally, with 11-seconds remaining in the second period Garrett Wait put Edina up 2-0, when he beat Lindgren.

Eagan got a goal from Jack Jenson after it emptied its net in the final minutes to cut the lead to one, briefly. But the Hornets put it away in the last minute when Malmquist scored his second goal of the game on an empty-netter.

Hermantown heads to fifth straight championship

In 2010 the Breck Mustangs won the Class 1A Boys' Hockey State Tournament. In 2011 the St. Thomas Academy Cadets won the crown, and they did it again in 2012 and again in 2013. Hermantown was the loser in each of those championship games.

Although devastating, the losses haven't proved to be debilitating. A 4-2 victory over New Prague this afternoon in the semifinal round of the state tournament has No. 2-seed Hermantown back in the championship game for a fifth consecutive year.

According to the Star Tribune, Hermantown is only the third team in any classification to reach a state championship five years in a row.

The Hawks will play the winner of the other 1A semifinal between top-seed East Grand Forks.

Goal in the third lifts East Grand Forks to victory

Tanner Tweten's goal at the 4:19 mark of the third period lifted East Grand Forks over St. Cloud Cathedral 2-1 in the semifinals of the Class A State Boys Hockey Tournament.

The win moves East Grand Forks, the tournament's top seed, into the championship where they will meet Hermantown.

The trip to the championship for East Grand Forks wasn't an easy one. Despite outshooting the Crusaders 36-22 and controlling much of the ice it was a battle to win.

St. Cloud State goalie Zach Fritz made 34 saves in the loss to keep the Crusaders in the game.

The last 2A semifinal game is tonight. Edina is matched up against Eagan. Get a full preview right here.
