State Hockey: Day 1 highlighted by thrilling overtime win for Apollo

Brandon Bissett scored the game's lone goal in overtime to lift St. Cloud Apollo to a 1-0 victory over Breck in the final game of the opening day of the Minnesota State Class A boys hockey tournament.

Bissett's goal came on Apollo's 14th shot on goal of the night, while St. Cloud goaltender Nick Althaus stopped all 25 shots that he faced.

The goal came as Apollo's Gino Lucia caught Breck on a line change and found Bissett open for an odd man rush near the top of the circle. Bissett then got the puck by Breck goaltender Stephen Headrik for the game winner.

Apollo advances to face Hermantown in the semifinals on Friday.

Mahtomedi doubles up on New Ulm in tournament opener

Second-seeded Mahtomedi defeated New Ulm 6-3 in the opening game of the Class 1A boys' hockey State Tournament Wednesday at Xcel Energy Center.

Jack Becker led the Zephyrs, who are making their first state tourney appearance in five years, with a hat trick. Jack Gunderson added a pair of goals and Kellen Campbell also scored, according to the official box score.

Ethan Kraus, Jon Kopacek and Colin Huffman tallied goals for New Ulm.

Mahtomedi advances to the semfinals where it will play defending champion East Grand Forks in the semifinals.

Defending champion East Grand Forks advances to semifinals

Defending Class A champion East Grand Forks has advanced to the semifinals with their 4-0 defeat of New Prague.

Dixon Bowen scored a pair of goals and had an assist to lead the Green Wave to the opening round victory.

East Grand Forks goaltender Josh Weber stopped all 17 shots he faced.

Pionk, Kero's hat tricks help Hawks swarm Spring Lake Park

The top-seeded Hermantown Hawks shutout Spring Lake Park 8-0 in the State Class A hockey quarterfinal.

Senior forwards Nate Pionk and Ryan Kero led the Hawks attack, each had hat tricks in the game, but they also finished the contest with three assists apiece.

Hermantown got out to a quick lead netting three first period goals, one from Kero and a pair from Pionk.

Hermantown will meet up with St. Cloud Apollo in the semifinals on Friday.
