The Fabulous Five: Minnesota's best prep stories

KFAN's Joe Nelson is excited about the Timberwolves Shootout, featuring many of Minnesota's best high school basketball teams this Saturday at Target Center. That, along with holiday hockey tournament recaps, leads the way in his third edition of the "Fabulous Five."

Before I get started with my "Fabulous Five" prep sports stories, I want to offer my thoughts and prayers to Jack Jablonski. The 16 year-old from Benilde St. Margaret's was paralyzed after being checked from behind during a junior varsity game last week. He's scheduled to undergo spinal surgery on Wednesday. You can send a message to Jack and help donate through his CaringBridge page.

Now, the list...

5. The "Who Was That?" team
Every season we find high school athletes making names for themselves. They are not the Division I recruits, but they are usually keeping their team competitive on a game-by-game basis. Check out this list of basketball players fitting that description.

4. Duluth East destroys Minnetonka
The No. 1 ranked Greyhounds pulverized No. 2 Minnetonka, 6-2 in the championship game of the Schwan Cup Gold Division. Duluth East carried a shutout into the third period. The blowout erases any doubt about the Greyhounds being the best team in Minnesota.

3. Maple Grove holds off Benilde St. Margaret's
The Crimson held off a hard-charging Red Knights boy's hockey team to claim the Sports Authority Holiday Hockey Classic tournament. Maple Grove received a huge effort by goaltender Kyle Koop, who made 18 of his 34 saves in the third period.

2. Apple Valley finishes second at The Clash
St. Edwards of Ohio claimed the crown at The Clash X. It's the biggest high school wrestling tournament in the country, and the No. 2 ranked team in the U.S. ended Apple Valley's three-year reign as Clash champs.

1. Timberwolves Shootout
This, in my opinion, is the best day of Minnesota high school basketball up until the section playoffs begin. The Timberwolves will host six games at Target Center this Saturday. The games include two basketball powers from Iowa and Wisconsin, and one team from South Dakota. The late game between Apple Valley and Onalaska (WI) should be great. My guess is that Tyus Jones and company hand Wisconsin's top-ranked Division 2 team its first loss.
