Softball: KoMets look to repeat as state champs

There are high hopes for the KoMets. Defending Class AA champions Kasson-Mantorville (23-2), led by Maddie Damon, are looking to defend their state softball title as the state tournament begins Thursday. Damon is the ace, a senior pitcher who has 1,599 career strikeouts and nine perfect games – both are current MSHSL records.And she leads the team offensively this season with a .448 average, 12 home runs and 30 RBIs. The KoMets take on Milaca at 1 p.m.

Boys tennis: Virginia duo enters state tournament

Virginia's Tom Prittinen and Jake Seitz have a tough task – taking on the best of the best in the Class A boys tennis state doubles tournament while still getting to know each other. The duo were just paired together by their coach for the postseason; Prittinen is a senior and Seitz a freshman. Their first match is against Jared Saue and Taylor Landmark of Montevideo, at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Keaton Thompson eschews NHL, returns to UND

University of North Dakota defenseman Keaton Thompson had an offer from the Anaheim Ducks to join the NHL squad – but turned it down. Thompson will return to UND for his junior year, helping maintain a defensive corps that was tops in the nation last year.
