Twins beat Royals 8-3, avoid series sweep

The Minnesota Twins had a much better outing against the Royals Sunday afternoon than in the first two games of their weekend series, coming out with an 8-3 win at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City after losing the previous two.

Twins starter Phil Hughes broke his own personal losing streak that dated to last July, winning for the first time in 17 appearances, the Associated Press reports. Hughes (1-1), signed a $24 million, three-year deal with the Twins in December.

Hughes scattered nine hits, and made it past the fifth inning for the first time since joining the Twins, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The Twins scoring attack was led by third baseman Trevor Plouffe who had two doubles, a triple and a walk.

Brian Dozier had three hits, and rookie Josmil Pinto, serving as the designated hitter, walked twice and hit his fourth homer.

The loss ended Kansas City's five-game winning streak.

The Twins travel to Tampa Bay for a three-game series starting Tuesday, then return home to Target Field next weekend for a series against Detroit.
