The Rule 5 draft aims to prevent teams from stockpiling too many young players on their minor league affiliate teams when other teams would be willing to have them play in the majors.

Twins add pitching with Maloney, Davis

The Twins added pitching depth Monday by claiming a couple of pitchers off waivers. Matt Maloney, a 27-year old right-hander, split time in Triple-A and the big leagues with the Reds. Minnesota also signed 29-year old right-hander Jeff Gray off waivers from the Mariners.
