Twins cut Matt Guerrier as they close in on 25-man roster

After another round of cuts, the Minnesota Twins trimmed their roster to 29 players today. Four more players will go between now and Opening Day next Monday against the Chicago White Sox.

The marquee name dropped from the roster today was relief pitcher Matt Guerrier. According to the Pioneer Press, the Twins granted Guerrier an unconditional release, meaning he becomes a free agent and can sign with another team. Minnesota is reportedly open to bringing him back on a minor-league deal.

The 35-year-old was the older player at Twins camp and is working his way back from elbow surgery. The right-hander was one of Minnesota's best relievers from 2004-2010.

According to the Star Tribune, the Twins optioned relief pitchers Michael Tonkin and Ryan Pressly, as well as catcher Chris Herrmann to Triple-A Rochester. Non-rostered players optioned to minor-league camp were pitchers Matt Hoffman, Aaron Thomspon and Deolis Guerra, outfielder Wilkin Ramirez, and infielders Doug Bernier and Deibinson Romero.

The moves, the Pioneer Press says, indicate a strong chance that catcher Josmil Pinto will make the team and outfielder/designated hitter Jason Kubel will be playing more defense than originally expected.

The current roster breakdown includes 13 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders and six outfielders, according to 1500 ESPN.

Manager Ron Gardenhire recently said he only plans on carrying 12 pitchers on the 25-man roster.
