It's a pretty big blow to start the season.

Ervin Santana was an All-Star a season ago, but that almost certainly won't be the case in 2018 now that he's likely going to miss the first full month of the season.

The Twins announced Tuesday evening that Santana needs surgery (or has already had the surgery, it's unclear) to repair discomfort in the middle finger of his pitching hand.

Santana will begin rehabbing this week and is expected to return in 10-12 weeks. That puts him out until sometime between April 17-May 8.

The right-hander felt discomfort in the finger late last season but the Twins determined surgery wasn't necessary, and Santana was fine until the pain returned recently.

With Santana out, Minnesota's starting rotation to begin the season now only appears to have two locks: Jose Berrios and Kyle Gibson.
