Twins hold off A's for first 5-game winning streak since 2013

The force was with the Minnesota Twins as they beat the Oakland Athletics 8-7 Monday night at Target Field. It was the fifth straight victory for the Twins.

The Twins overcame a first-inning grand slam from Stephen Vogt which gave the A's an early 4-0 lead.

Minnesota answered back with four of its own in the second, then bounced back with four more in the sixth after Oakland had taken a 5-4 lead. Three of those runs scored on this blast from Torii Hunter.

It wasn't the best start for Phil Hughes, but he did pick up his first victory of the year. He gave up five runs on nine hits, including the grand slam, but still improved to 1-4 on the season.

The Twins bullpen held the A's down and Glen Perkins picked up his ninth save of the season.

Hunter finished just 1-for-5, but had the three-run homer. Brian Dozier was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs. Eduardo Escobar had another good day at the plate; he was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Jordan Schaefer put together one of his best games as a Twin. He finished 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

Oakland starter Jesse Hahn wasn't able to hold the four- run lead. He was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs in five innings.

Trevor May heads back to the mound for the Twins on Tuesday against Oakland's Jesse Chavez.
