Twins pitcher Samuel Deduno suffers groin injury

A groin injury will keep Twins pitcher Samuel Deduno out of the lineup Sunday, reports.

The right-hander was scheduled to take the mound against Toronto, but was scratched by Twins manager Ron Gardenhire in favor of right-hander P.J. Walters.

Gardenhire says Deduno's status is "day to day" because of minor groin tightness.

The injury may be result of something that happened on the mound when Deduno was pitching for the Dominican Republic in the rain during the World Baseball Classic Tuesday in San Francisco, the Pioneer Press reports.

The paper said multiple replays of the telecast showed the pitcher's "left foot slipping on the wet mound as he strode toward home plate."

Deduno had a 0.69 earned-run average and went 2-0 for the Dominican Republic in the WBC.

He started in the title game, which the Dominican Republic won.
