Twins sign 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Wander Javier

On the same day the Twins called up one of the most-highly touted prospects in their system, they have agreed to a contract with another.

The Twins agreed to a $4 million contract with 16-year-old shortstop Wander Javier Thursday, according to several media reports.

The Pioneer Press reports its the highest bonus the Twins have ever given to an international player.

"We feel he's a shortstop," Twins vice president of player personnel, Mike Radcliff, told the Pioneer Press. "He has all the skills, all the tools to be projected to be able to play in the middle infield, particularly at shortstop. Our projection is for him to have bat potential, as well. There's enough upside that we believe he'll hit for average and power."

Some experts believe Javier, who is ranked No. 8 on MLB.com's Top 30 International Prospects list, could be the best all-around player in the class.

According to MLB.com blogger Jesse Sanchez, Javier possesses plus power, a plus arm and plus strength. The report also notes that he's shown an ability to hit in games and scouting showcases. Some even think he has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order player in the future.

Radcliff told the Star Tribune it's a mere coincidence the Twins are promoting Miguel Sano on the same day they signed Javier.

"People say, 'You're finally promoting [Sano]. He just turned 22 – what do you mean, 'finally?'" Radcliff said. "But the organization should be proud today. From ownership's commitment to go ahead [with the signing], for all the people who have worked with him, to the scouts, to player development, to strength and conditioning guys, for the coaching – there should be a sense of pride, no matter what happens starting today. To get to this point is a big deal."
