Twins sign Anibal Sanchez, and he's been horrible the last 3 years

He was fantastic in 2013, but we're reporting that it's currently 2018.

The Minnesota Twins have signed 34-year-old right-handed starter Anibal Sanchez, FanRag's Jon Heyman reports

It's a one-year deal worth $2.5 million, which can escalate to a total of $5 million through incentives.

According to MLB reporter Rhett Bollinger, the deal is not guaranteed. In order to get paid, Sanchez has to make the 40-man roster.

Is Sanchez good?

He could be, but only if he reverts to his 2014 form when he went 8-5 with a 3.43 ERA for the Tigers. In 2013, Sanchez led the American League with a 2.57 ERA.

But his last three seasons have been terrible.

  • 2015: 10-10, 4.99 ERA
  • 2016: 7-13, 5.87 ERA
  • 2017: 3-7, 6.41 ERA

Twins Daily's Seth Stohs is baffled by the move, suggesting that it's "highly unlikely" that Sanchez will be effective.

If he does make the starting five, he'll fit in with Jose Berrios, Kyle Gibson and, eventually, Ervin Santana, who's out for at least the first month of the season with a finger injury.

Phil Hughes, Adalberto Mejia, Aaron Slegers, Felix Jorge, Stephen Gonsalves, Fernando Romero and Zack Littell are expected to compete in spring training for a starting spot as well.
