Red Sox clip Twins in series finale

Boston Red Sox 8

Minnesota Twins 7

The Twins fell just short of beating one of the best teams in the American League on Sunday.

They lost to Boston in the first game of the series last Thursday in a crushing 13-2 game. Then, they beat the Sox on Friday 2-1, and on Saturday 11-9.

But once the Sox got a five run lead in Sunday's game, the Twins couldn't come back, making it a 2-2 series.

Falling off in the fifth

The Sox scored five runs in the fifth inning on Sunday, too many for the Twins to make up for. The inning started tied at 3-3. Two home runs and a fielding error by third baseman Miguel Sano made the score 8-3 at the end of the inning.

“When I reacted to the ball, I thought the line drive was going a little faster,” Sano said about his error, according to the Pioneer Press. “When I tried to dive, at the last second, it hit my glove. I did all I could to dive and catch the ball.”

Comeback attempt

The Twins had their opportunities to come back Sunday. The sixth inning was scoreless, but a series of base hits brought two runs in the seventh and another two in the eighth.

Here's a tweet from the eighth inning:

Next, Vargas hit a sacrifice fly ball which brought in one run – which wasn't enough. A base hit from Juan Centeno gave the Twin's their other eighth inning run, bringing the score to 8-7. With two outs and men on the corners, Bryon Buxton struck out to end the inning. The Twins didn't get on base in the ninth.

Hot hitting

Just because they lost, doesn't mean the Twins didn't hit the ball well on Sunday. Fill-in catcher Juan Centeno had a great game at the plate:

Centeno filled in for Kurt Suzuki who was out with an injury after Saturday's game in Boston. A foul ball hit Suzuki in the face mask, requiring stitches in his chin, says KFGO.

Bryon Buxton and Kennys Vargas each had two RBIs on Sunday.

Rookie Max Kepler has already had 43 hits and 10 home runs this season. He tripled twice in the series against Boston.

Up Next:

The Twins have Monday off and then play the Atlanta Braves at Target Field on Tuesday. Both teams are in last place of their division. Ervin Santana (3-8) will take the mound for the Twins against Lucas Harrell (1-2).
