Twins to the World Series? At least one major media source thinks so

The season opens Thursday afternoon against Baltimore.

If you're looking for bold predictions, you won't find many that are overly positive about the Minnesota Twins.

Most national media consider the Twins a fringe playoff team, incapable of taking down the Indians in the AL Central and a likely loser once again in the wild card round of the playoffs.

According to FiveThirtyEight, the Twins have just a 36 percent chance to make the playoffs, and if they do get in it will be as a wild card, because it has the Cleveland Indians as a 79 percent favorite to win the AL Central.

USA Today has the Twins finishing 86-76 and finishing one game out of the playoff race behind the Los Angeles Angels.

It's more of the same from Yahoo! Sports and The Ringer. But the New York Post is putting all of its chips on the Twins to reach the World Series.

"The Minnesota Twins will outlast the American League behemoths in The Bronx, Boston, Cleveland and Houston to win the pennant and represent the junior circuit in the World Series. They’ll do this on the strength of a superb bullpen anchored by former Met Addison Reed and the ageless wonder Fernando Rodney."

The Twins are no stranger to making an improbable run in the playoffs. In 1987 they only had two starting pitchers with an ERA under 4 and their closer, Jeff Reardon, had blown 10 saves during the regular season. But they got to the series and won it in 7 games over the Cardinals.

That '87 team was named one of's four most unlikely World Series winners in MLB history. Perhaps history will repeat itself again in 2018.
