The University of Minnesota Duluth running back who was stabbed over the weekend was released from a Duluth hospital on Wednesday.

Duluth police have said that Austin Sikorski, 22, was stabbed early Saturday morning after a fight in downtown Duluth.

Police haven't said much about the fight that led to the stabbing. Earlier this week, they said they had a "person of interest," but had not made an arrest at that point and have not provided any further updates.

Sikorski said on Facebook that he was able to walk out of the hospital on his own, Wednesday.

He also issued a statement through UMD on Thursday.

"I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the UMD athletics staff, my teammates, family, friends and hospital staff, and to all of those who have shown their support in so many ways. I have been released from the hospital and look forward to furthering my recovery, getting back to full strength and turning my focus to the upcoming semester."

On the field, Sikorski is an important part of the Bulldogs offense. He ran for more than 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. The Northern Sun named him its North Division Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

UMD football coach Curt Wiese told the Duluth News Tribune that Sikorski is resting at home in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

"His mood's been great," Wiese told the News Tribune. "He's had a positive attitude through all of this. Austin's done a really good job fighting for his recovery. He was excited to get out of the hospital and return back home."

But when he could make a return to the Bulldogs football team is uncertain at this point.

"We don't have a really good gauge on Austin's return," Wiese said. "At this point, his focus is on getting better physically and resting over the next couple of weeks."

The Bulldogs, who were picked to win the Northern Sun this year, open preseason camp Aug. 16.
