Upset and thrillers: Farmington, Grand Rapids add to crazy hockey playoffs

Publish date:

Defending big school state champion Lakeville North will not defend its title this season. The Panthers were bounced by Farmington 6-2 in the Class 2A, Section 1 final on Thursday night.

Farmington's blowout victory wasn't predictable for the average hockey fan, but the Tigers did sweep the regular season series against Lakeville North. Nonetheless, Lakeville North, ranked No. 7 in the state, joins the following powers (state rankings in parenthesis) to bow out before State.

  • Benilde-St. Margaret's (1)
  • Minnetonka (3)
  • Holy Family Catholic (4)
  • Blaine (5)
  • St. Cloud Apollo (3 in Class 1A)
  • Mahtomedi (4 in Class 1A)

Not too mention the high-powered Luverne Cardinals being stunned by Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato on Wednesday night and Burnsville destroying St. Thomas Academy 7-1 on Thursday night.

But the game of the night belongs to Grand Rapids and Duluth East. Grand Rapids scored with 6 seconds left in regulation to end Duluth East's run of seven straight Section 7 titles, including three in a row to end Grand Rapids' season, according to the Duluth News Tribune.

Duluth East held a 5-3 lead in the period only to let it slip away before Alex Adams' game-winning goal.

Class 1A state tournament field will include:

  • Mankato West (Section 1)
  • Breck (Section 2)
  • Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (Section 3)
  • Totino-Grace or St. Paul Academy (Section 4)
  • Princeton (Section 5)
  • St. Cloud Cathedral (Section 6)
  • Hermantown (Section 7)
  • Thief River Falls (Section 8)

Class 2A state tournament field will include:

  • Farmington (Section 1)
  • Eden Prairie (Section 2)
  • Burnsville (Section 3)
  • Stillwater or Hill-Murray (Section 4)
  • Anoka (Section 5)
  • Wayzata (Section 6)
  • Grand Rapids (Section 7)
  • Bemidji (Section 8)

This is the first season since 2007-08 that both Edina and Duluth East haven't made the 2A tournament. You have to go all the way back to the 2005-06 season to find a state tournament bracket without both Edina and Duluth East.

Brackets and seeds will be announced Saturday morning. The tournament runs Wednesday-Saturday next week.
