We could get a rare State Hockey title game without a metro team

There hasn't been a 2A state title game featuring two greater Minnesota teams since 2007.

Since the State Hockey Tournament started in 1945, only 13 of the big school championship games have featured two teams from greater Minnesota.

Even more astounding is that it's happened only six times since 1962, and just three times in the last 44 years.

  • 1962: International Falls 4, Roseau 0
  • 1966: International Falls 5, Roseau 0
  • 1972: International Falls 3, Grand Rapids 2
  • 1990: Roseau 3, Grand Rapids 1
  • 1995: Duluth East 5, Moorhead 3
  • 2007: Roseau 5, Grand Rapids 1

There was only one class of hockey from 1945-1991. A two-class system has been in place ever since.

It will happen again this year if Moorhead and Grand Rapids win semifinal games tonight at Xcel Energy Center.

  • 6 p.m. – Moorhead vs. Lakeville South
  • 8 p.m. – Eden Prairie vs. Grand Rapids

Seventy-one years of state titles and only 13 non-metro championship games. Moorhead and Lakeville South haven't played this year. Grand Rapids beat Eden Prairie 3-1 back in December.
