There is something truly Minnesotan about Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen.

She grew up in Minnesota, played college basketball for the Gophers and now plays professionally for the Minnesota Lynx.

Now, Whalen has been named one of the finalists for the WNBA's Top 20@20, which will honor some of the best and most influential players in the league's history.

Whalen is one of 60 nominees selected for the award. The nominees have been chosen on factors that include on-court performance, leadership, sportsmanship and contributions to team success.

Based on those guidelines Whalen certainly could make a strong case.

In addition to helping lead the Lynx to three WNBA Championships, she also led the Minnesota Gophers to the 2004 Final Four. Whalen and her Lynx teammates could be on track for more hardware. They have already set a WNBA record by starting this season 11-0.

Whalen's had a lot of individual success, too. She is a five-time all-star and three-time All-WNBA First Team selection.

The Hutchinson native is just 64 points away from the 5,000-point threshold. When she gets there, she will be the only player in league history to tally at least 5,000 points, 2,000 assists and 1,500 rebounds.

The top 20 will be unveiled June 21st on ESPN's "SportsCenter" during the 9 a.m. hour.
