Have you wondered why there are so many commercials when you watch an NFL game this season?

If so, you aren't alone – and faced with a shrinking television audience the league is considering doing something about it.

The average NFL game averages just over three hours. According to Sportsgrid.com, during that time the viewer only sees about 11 minutes of actual football game action.

The same viewer watching the same game sees about 63 minutes worth of commercials.

NFL media executive Brian Rolapp was at the NAB New York show Wednesday where he addressed the issue of shrinking ratings. He said the league isn't overly concerned about it, but they would like to see the ratings bounce back.

Broadcast and Cable reports Rolapp proposed several things that could quicken the pace of play, but he added that the league is also taking a hard look at how it handles advertising.

"In a world where Netflix has no commercials and consumers are used to 15 seconds of pre-roll, is there a better way to do commercials with our broadcast partners?"

There might be something to that.

The blog Awful Announcing notes t-v viewers are getting used to watching fewer and fewer commercials with the advent of things like Netflix and DVR, so having to sit through more than 60 minutes of commercials to watch a single football game might be too much.
