On July 26, 1996, Max Winter -- one of the original Vikings owners -- died at the age of 92. "Winter Park" -- the Vikings headquarters in Eden Prairie -- is named in his honor. The founding group of Vikings owners included Max Winter, E. William Boyer, H.P Skoglund, Ole Haugsrud and Bernard H. Ridder, Jr.

In this 2011 blog posting, former Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton remembers how each man came to their position, and calls Winter a "tough street fighter."

Sports Illustrated columnist Steve Rushin wrote in 2010 (as Favre Year 2 was winding down) that the Vikings had most of their success when owned -- in part -- by the "perfectly named" Max Winter. It's required reading as Minnesota fans head into another season filled with promise. Rushin also believes the new outdoors Vikings stadium should echo corporate, and be named "Winter Park."

Report: Vikings close to a new stadium deal in Minnesota

On NBC's Football Night in America, sports writer Peter King reported the Vikings and Minnesota officials are close to a new stadium deal. According to NBC Sports, it's not a matter of "if," but "when." The Vikings have called Minnesota home since their NFL debut in 1961, but the Metrodome lease expires after the 2011 season. The report did not state whether the new stadium would be in Arden Hills or Minneapolis.
