Wild acquire Sean Bergenheim from Florida in pre-deadline deal

With the NHL's trade deadline approaching, the Minnesota Wild have again sneaked in and made a deal at the wire.

Just before the start of Tuesday night's game against Edmonton, the Wild announced they have acquired forward Sean Bergenheim and a 2016 seventh-round draft pick from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Minnesota's third-round pick in 2016.

Bergenheim, 31, has tallied 18 points (8 goals, 10 assists) in 39 games for the Panthers this season. The 6-foot, 193-pound, Finland native has tallied 179 points (95 goals, 84 assists) in 489 career NHL games with the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida.

In each of the last six seasons Bergenheim has scored at least 10 goals.

The Wild were busy before the deadline last year as well, snagging goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov and forward Matt Moulson in the final hours before the deadline.

According to the Star Tribune's Michael Russo, Florida had been asking for a second-round pick in exchange for Bergenheim. But he had been in and out of the lineup recently and had requested a trade.

Bergenheim was originally drafted by the Islanders in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2202 NHL Entry Draft.

He has represented Finland at the 2002 World Junior and Under-18 Championships, the 2003 World Junior Championship and the 2007 and 2008 World Championships.

During Tuesday night's Wild-Oilers on FOX Sports North Russo said the Wild remain in the market for a defenseman.
