Wild Card race: Twins inch closer with win over Tigers; Angels lose 4th straight

Minnesota's cushion got bigger and now there are just nine games to go.
Author:

After scoring six runs in three games against the Yankees, the Twins' bats woke up Thursday night in Detroit with a 12-1 win over the Tigers.

Joe Mauer and Jorge Polanco paced Minnesota with three hits apiece as the Twins racked up 14 hits and drew 10 walks. Detroit pitchers combined to throw 212 pitches in just nine innings.

The win puts Minnesota at 79-74, two-and-a-half games up on the Angels (76-76) in the race for the second American League Wild Card. The Angels have lost four straight, including three in a row to the red-hot Indians, and now they have to host the Houston Astros Friday-Sunday.

The Twins now have nine games to play and six of them are against the Tigers, who, with the loss to the Twins tonight, have lost 34 of their last 45 games.
