Winning start No. 1 won't be easy for Ponder

Christian Ponder will have the home crowd behind him Sunday when he makes his first career start against the undefeated Packers, but that probably won't be enough to disrupt Aaron Rodgers and company. Ponder will have to make his receivers look better than they've been, and do so running for his life.

Christian Ponder might be running for his for life Sunday when he makes his first start against the undefeated Green Bay Packers. The reason we suggest he'll be running is because the offensive line protecting him could be down two starters -- Phil Loadholt and John Sullivan -- both missed Wednesday's practice.

Regardless of who's protecting Ponder, Sunday's game against the defending Super Bowl champs will be the first look at potential prosperity in the future.

How about prosperity against the Packers? If Ponder plans on providing the purple with a boost, he's likely going to have to do it against an exotic Dom Capers defense. The rookie told KFAN radio that he thinks Capers will "throw the whole kitchen sink" at him.

Beating Green Bay with a rookie quarterback at the helm is probably a long shot. Actually, it's statistically improbable. However, the Packers have the 31st worst pass defense in the NFL. Will the Vikings 29th ranked passing attack be able to improve with Ponder?

The other side of the field will feature Aaron Rodgers. If Ponder can learn a thing for two from his game the Vikings will end up just fine in the future.
